Buy Nothing Sunday
Buy Nothing Sunday - Statement
Buy Nothing Sunday is not about telling people how to live their lives, but we do believe there needs to be a limit to protect the things that matter most to us. At this time of year and in the run up tp christmas everyone will be in a frenzy to spend. In reality people need to think about whether consuming more improves their quality of life ,and the effect over consumption has on the enviorment and the increase in poverty throughout the world. Shopping on Sunday adds to this. In the past ,very few shops opened on Sunday but still the world went its merry way.
Ask yourself the question, why am i doing this shopping on Sunday? which ad am i responding to? what do i value?
We must spread the idea that more isn't better. TV and advertising are telling us we need more of this that and the other. People enjoy many things about Christmas and Sunday, spiritual satisfaction, family ,friends,or having a holiday break,so Christmas and Sunday are more than just about consuming goods. After Christmas look at the excess left lying around,we must challenge the advertisers that tell us we need more. Sunday is about quality of life and what makes us better people.
History has shown that Sunday was always a day of rest. All major religions have a special day off.
Remember freedom to shop on Sunday takes away the freedom of someone else who has to work. We must also try to preserve community life. Shopping on Sunday brings noise and congestion,it also hits community activities. Your small retail shop is always affected when larger stores open on Sunday.
We need one day a week when the pace of life slows down collectively.
A consumer poll in Britain (nop) have a few findings.
71% of people say they would not be bothered if the larger shiops closed on Sundays so long as local convenience stores continued to open.
Almosthalf(41%) of people questioned think that shopping on a Sunday can add to People's overall stress levels at the weekend. three out of every four people say they would rather be assured of one day a week to spend with family and friends than have extra hours to shop on Sunday.
71% of people think that employers should not have the right to require employees(excluding those in the emergency and essential sevices)to work on Sundays.
Sunday as Holy
A passage from the prophet Isaiah 58 :13 " if you keep your feet from breaking the sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day,if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lords holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find joy in the Lord"
Keeping the Sabbath brings great joy! From the book of Exodus 20:11 "Remember the Sabbath day,to keep it holy, six days you shall labour and do all your work, bit the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God" Catholic Catechism 2193.
On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are bound.... to abstain from those labours and buisness concerns which impede the worship rendered to God,the joy which is proper to the lord's day or the proper relaxation of mind or body (C1C,can.1247)
When the restaurant next to another Church put out a big sign with red letters that said, "Open Sundays," the church reciprocated with its own message: "We are open on Sundays, too."

Speak Out
Here are some ways in which you can make your voice heard.
Write to your local TD, Councilor
Remind him/her of the statistics showing that most consumers and shopworkers don't want longer trading hours, and let him know what you think the cost to your community would be.
Write to your local paper.
Writing a letter to the editor of your local paper is a great way to raise awareness in your community. Most people think of Sunday trading only from the point of the consumer's right to shop, so why not remind people of the effect longer trading hours will have on shopworkers and their families, on the Gardai, security, banking, distribution, transport, health and catering staff who also have to work when shops are open, and on the communities around large shopping stores which already suffer from congestion and noise six and a half days a week..
Again, please remember at all times to be polite and courteous - angry letters and provocative tactics will always do more harm than good.
